What the Research Says

Proven outcomes.
Real science.

Our program is built on peer-reviewed research. Every claim we make is backed by a study you can read yourself.

Emotional Regulation

Martial arts training builds self-confidence, reduces aggression, and encourages prosocial behaviour — giving children the tools to manage emotions in high-pressure moments.

"Martial arts and combat sports build self-confidence, reduce aggression and encourage prosocial behaviour."

Resilience & Problem Solving

A randomised controlled trial with 283 NSW students found every measure of resilience and self-efficacy improved for martial arts participants — while declining in the control group.

"All measures relating to resilience and self-efficacy improved for the intervention group, whereas results declined for the control group."
Moore, Woodcock & Dudley, Int. Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Macquarie University NSW, 2019 — Read study →

Discipline & Focus

Rigorous, structured martial arts training fosters discipline and personal growth that extends beyond the mat — improving self-efficacy across academic, social, and emotional domains.

"Rigorous training fosters resilience, discipline and personal growth."

Leadership & Social Skills

Martial arts gym environments foster inclusivity, mutual respect, and belonging — foundational qualities of genuine leadership that students carry beyond the mat.

Why Mixed Martial Arts Specifically

Not all martial arts
are the same.

MMA combines striking and grappling — making it the most complete developmental framework available in youth sport.

95%
of youth MMA athletes aged 8–17 agreed they were more resilient because of MMA participation. The same group recorded a depression rate of just 3.7% — versus a 15.8% national average.

Striking

Boxing & Muay Thai

Striking arts develop coordination, timing, and spatial awareness at a rapid pace. Learning to punch, kick, and move with precision requires children to develop both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously — building hand-eye coordination, rhythm, and the ability to read and react to movement.

Beyond the physical, striking teaches children about controlled force — the discipline of being capable of impact and choosing restraint. Strength paired with self-control.

Grappling

Wrestling & Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Grappling is where emotional intelligence and physical skill intersect most directly. Every position is a problem. Every escape is a solution. This is chess in real time.

Grappling requires a level of trust and physical closeness that is unique in sport. Children learn to be comfortable with vulnerability, to stay calm under pressure, and to communicate physically without aggression.

Striking develops the body. Grappling develops the mind.
Together, they develop the whole child.

Class as a Reset
Energy cannot be created or destroyed —
only transferred.

Children carry the weight of their day everywhere they go. The frustration of a hard school day. The tension of a social conflict. The restlessness of a body that hasn't moved enough. That energy doesn't disappear when they sit down for homework or come to the dinner table.

AscendX class is where that energy goes. Children arrive carrying the weight of their day. They move, they train, they release — and they leave with capacity.

When a child offloads physical and emotional tension through training, they return home with a regulated nervous system. Calmer at the dinner table. More present with their family. More ready to engage with homework, conversation, and rest.

More Than a Class

A Community

Something unusual happens when children step onto the mat. They arrive, often guarded, and they are asked to be vulnerable — to try things they can't yet do, in front of others who are doing the same. There is no bench. There is no audience. Everyone is in it together.

That shared vulnerability becomes trust. And trust becomes community.

Research from Griffith University confirms this is not just a feeling — it is a measurable outcome. Martial arts environments are characterised by inclusivity, mutual respect, and a genuine sense of belonging that participants carry well beyond the gym.

"Positive interactions and support from the gym community provided significant benefits for participants."
